Many football fans took to Twitter to hail the heroics of Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk, who popped up with an equaliser late, late on in the Netherlands game against Germany on Monday night. It takes the Netherlands team to the finals of the Nations League in June and condemned the already relegated Germany to yet more misery. The Netherlands had gone two goals behind before Quincy Promes pulled a goal back with five minutes left. And it was Liverpool’s van Dijk who sent the orange army home singing when he finished with a vicious volley in the last minute of the game. Ronald Koeman’s side will now join Portugal, England and Switzerland in the finals in the summer after they failed to make the World Cup finals. And the one unifying thing about the tweets about van Dijk last night were that that they were 99% positive, with fans of lots of different clubs hailing him as the best centre-back in the world. On his present form we wouldn’t argue with that.

I always thought van Dijk had all the tools to be a cracking centre half in Scotland, but occasionally had lapses of concentration that would hold him back. He seems to have cut that out and has become a seriously impressive defender.
