Gary Lineker has praised Tottenham star Dele Alli for his contribution in the 3-1 win against Chelsea on Saturday.

The 22-year-old did really well to get across the Chelsea defence to head Tottenham in front at Wembley, converting with a header from Christian Eriksen’s devilish free kick.

Lineker was particularly pleased with the England international’s intervention: “Great start for Tottenham as Dele Alli does what he does so well,” he tweeted on his personal Twitter account.

Harry Kane added a second for Spurs in the first half, as Chelsea defender David Luiz bizarrely got out of the way of the England captain’s strike.

OPINION

It’s always nice to see ex professionals praising the young talent of today, and Alli certainly deserved Lineker’s compliments for his headed opener against the Blues. He did extremely well to get across the Chelsea backline to head Eriksen’s terrific ball home. It’s that sort of clever movement that sets Alli apart from his fellow midfielders. He knows where the goal is, always has, and that’s such a boost for Spurs when so much of their goalscoring burden falls on the shoulders of Kane. When Alli’s out of the team you notice it because Tottenham look significantly less dangerous going forward. His header was a nice one, as well. It was a beautiful flicked effort with a twist of his neck, exactly what Eriksen’s delivery called for. Spurs needed a good start against Maurizio Sarri’s in form side, and Alli’s early goal certainly gave them that – Mauricio Pochettino will have been thrilled with his efforts.
