Cameron Carter-Vickers has insisted his career plan is to develop while on loan and return to Tottenham to be a star of their first team.

The centre-back is on a third consecutive loan at Swansea City after spells last season at Ipswich Town and Sheffield United.

He is set to feature for United States in their friendly international against England on Thursday night despite struggling for game time in the Championship.

Carter-Vickers explained his dream is still to be a permanent member of Spurs first team and that he is enjoying life at Swansea.

“The manager [Graham Potter] is good, the players are good, I really believe we can do big things this season,” he told the Times. “I want to do well for the team and get results but the bigger picture is to improve and come back to my parent club a better player.

“I’m signed to Spurs, my aim is to get in that team and to play in that new stadium would be great.”

OPINION

Carter-Vickers is in a curious position where he is a six-times international at the age of 20, but does not figure in the plans of Tottenham and is not playing regularly for his temporary employers, who are eighth in the Championship. He has made just four appearances for the Swans and was once again an unused substitute in their 1-0 win at Bolton Wanderers last season. Quite why he is not playing is hard to fathom. Carter-Vickers made 34 league starts for Ipswich and Sheffield United last season and appeared to be developing well. Spurs will certainly be unimpressed that he is not getting regular game time in south Wales, and don’t be surprised if his loan is ripped up in January and he is sent to another club where he might play more often. It is a nomadic existence for the powerful centre-back, but a necessary one, given the riches available at the back to Mauricio Pochettino. It appears another young gun, Juan Foyth, has climbed above Carter-Vickers in the centre-back pecking order while he’s been away, too.
