Phil Hay has delivered an update on Leeds centre-back Pontus Jansson after the enforcer was withdrawn from Sweden’s international squad this week.

He said that Jansson is due back at Elland Road today and will then have scans to assess the extent of his injury.

Hay delivered the update on his personal Twitter page after being asked by a fan for an update.

OPINION
This isn’t going to make Leeds fans feel any better about the extent of the injury suffered by Jansson. He’s an absolutely key player for Marcelo Bielsa, especially after they were hammered 4-1 in their last league game by West Brom. Gaetano Berardi is on the long-term injured list and that only leaves Liam Cooper as a senior centre-back, with Under-23s man Conor Shaughnessy as a possible back-up. He hasn’t played any league games this season though, with just one cameo in the league cup to his name. It’s a real worry and fans must have been hoping that Jansson was withdrawn as a precaution. However, he seemed to turn his ankle in the game against West Brom and with him now due for scans to assess the extent of the injury, there will be a real concern that he’s got ligament damage that could keep him out for a period for Leeds. That would be a huge blow and one that could lead the club back into the transfer market in January. Fans had been calling for a new centre-back in the summer. It looks like they might have been right.
