Newcastle United will need to bring in significant reinforcements in January if they want to avoid a relegation battle, and full-back is an area of concern for manager Rafa Benitez.

First-choice players DeAndre Yedlin and Paul Dummett essentially walk into the starting team when fit, and that lack of competition is something which needs to be addressed quickly.

The top teams in the Premier League always have two quality players competing for every position, and that needs to be something that comes into place at St. James’ Park over the next few windows.

In the immediate term, signing one full-back in January will be key for Benitez, and the perfect opportunity has now arisen for him to sign a new face who will significantly improve his options in that position.

As reported by The Sun, Manchester United right-back Matteo Darmian is heading for a January exit as he seeks first-team football.

The 28-year-old Italy international is out of contract in the summer and the Red Devils are reported to have spoken to both Inter Milan and Roma about a January deal.

Manager Jose Mourinho is said to be keen on keeping Darmian around, with the club having an option to extend his deal, but he will also not stand in his way as he seeks first-team football.

While a return to Italy is obviously the move most on the cards for Darmian, there is no reason why Benitez could not hijack their interest and bring Darmian to Tyneside in January.

The 28-year-old has the necessary Premier League experience to hit the ground running for the Magpies, and would represent a step up defensively from Yedlin on the right.

Darmian’s versatility is also another huge asset, with the Italian able to play on the left as well, meaning he can provide cover for Dummett.

All in all this is an absolute no-brainer for Newcastle, who would be addressing one of their biggest issues with a proven Premier League performer for a reasonable price.
