Many Leeds United fans turned to Twitter on Saturday night to drool over the performance of West Brom winger Matt Phillips as he starred in the Baggies’ 4-1win at the Hawthorns.

After a goalless first half the home side sparked into life in the second 45 minutes, with Hal Robson-Kanu breaking the stalemate after a swift counter attack.

It was Phillips who secured the all-important second goal, firing a long range shot past the outstretched arms of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, and after an impressive display there were a number of Leeds fans who were mightily impressed on social media by what they saw from the 27-year-old.

COMMENTARY

It is never easy after a disappointing defeat but these Leeds fans have shown plenty of humility and decency to applaud what they have seen from the opposition’s star. To be fair to the supporters, they would have been kidding themselves had they not admitted that Phillips was one of, if not the, best player on the pitch on Saturday night, for his pace caused Leeds all sorts of problems throughout the game. They are absolutely right in saying that Marcelo Bielsa could well do with a player of his quality and attacking instinct, for Stuart Dallas and Ezgjan Alioski were well and truly shown up by the Baggies man. As for suggesting a swap involving the Macedonian international, you cannot see West Brom wanting to part with Phillips any time soon. He is arguably Premier League quality, and showed everything he has to offer against the Whites.
