A section of England fans took to Twitter to lay into Jordan Henderson for his cameo performance as England strolled to a 3-0 win against USA last night (Thursday).

The Liverpool midfielder started on the bench as Gareth Southgate rested most of the big guns and fielded a very youthful line-up but came on after 58 minutes as a replacement for Tottenham star Dele Alli.

Many supporters were dismissive of the contribution of Henderson, with comments including “headless chicken” and “ought to retire with Rooney”.

COMMENTARY:

Those England fans laying into Henderson for his 32-minute cameo against USA were quick to point out his faults and highlighted how his passing contribution paled in comparison with farewell hero Wayne Rooney. Even Henderson’s nearest and dearest would never claim he has the vision or playmaking class of the nation’s record goalscorer. That’s not what the Liverpool man does. He is a whirlwind of energy who protects the defence, intercepts, wins the ball and gives it to those who can create and score goals. Destroying him for claiming he is not a creative genius misses the point of what he does. However, it should be pointed out that Henderson also gets it in the neck from many Liverpool fans on a regular basis who claim he is too wonky in possession. That said, the midfielder did fine against USA and, from a Liverpool point of view, the club should be pleased he got some minutes under his belt after missing many matches of late due to injury.
