A section of England fans took to Twitter to criticise Eric Dier for his performance for England in their 3-0 triumph against USA at Wembley on Thursday night.
The Tottenham midfielder did not start the match as Gareth Southgate fielded an experimental line-up but came on after 58 minutes as a replacement for Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell.
Many supporters were unimpressed by the contribution of Dier, with comments including “my nan is head and shoulders above”.

Like Jordan Henderson, Dier has become a whipping boy for England supporters who believe he offers too much sterility and not enough dynamism in the centre of the pitch. Many gloried in his perfect spatchcocking of Sergio Ramos last month, but were quick to get on his back for a perfectly acceptable 32 minutes as England ran out convincing winners against the USA on Thursday. England were already 2-0 up and in control when Dier came on as part of a triple substitution also introducing Henderson and record goal scorer Wayne Rooney. Unsurprisingly, many pointed out how the Spurs midfield anchorman lacks the passing range of farewell hero Rooney. But that is not quite the point. Dier is a protector of the defence and not a playmaker. His style of play means he’s always going to get criticism, but Tottenham fans appreciate how good and reliable he is. One day, most England ones will, too.
