Sky Sports pundit Craig Bellamy has gushed over Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, praising him for how he adds quality to the Denmark team.
He says that the Danes are a difficult team to play against as they are very strong defensively, but said they have that extra bit of quality now that the Spurs magician is in their side.
Bellamy adds that in any sort of attacking play Denmark embark on, Eriksen is always at the forefront of it because he is a “world class player” who is in the “top bracket”, which is further reinforced in the fact that he netted 21 goals in 37 league games for the Lilywhites last season.
“Denmark are a difficult team to play against. Defensively they’re very strong. But for Denmark they have Eriksen who has that bit of quality,” he told Sky Sports‘ ‘The Debate‘.
“I don’t think I’m over-exaggerating this but I do class him as a world class player – a top bracket player. I really do, he’s that good.
“You can see with Denmark that everything goes through him; if they’re going to create anything going forward it goes through him so he made the difference in that team.”
OPINION
Eriksen may have been in fine form for Tottenham last season, but the same can definitely not be said for him this time around. Bellamy is right to class him as a top player, but when somebody gives you that type of label, you need to perform a lot better – something which Eriksen needs to start doing. The likes of Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela are ahead of him in terms of quality this term and it is clear to see that they are miles ahead in terms of attacking threat. However, Mauricio Pochettino must be sweating that one of his star players is not up to scratch at the moment. Hopefully when the Premier League returns next week, he is able to recapture the form that dazzled many last year – or else he will start to become increasingly unpopular with the Spurs faithful. Time for Eriksen to step up – and fast.
