Swansea striker Oli McBurnie was handed a start for Scotland in their 3-1 loss to Portugal in a friendly on Sunday night, and a section of football fans have taken to Twitter to savage the 22-year-old for his display.

The European champions made light work of an experimental Scottish side as goals from Helder Costa, Eder and Bruma secured the win, with Steven Naismith netting a late consolation.

McBurnie failed to impress in leading the line for the Scots, and the Swansea forward has now been ripped to shreds on Twitter for his display.

OPINION

These fans seem pretty unimpressed with McBurnie’s performance for Scotland, and you can see why. The Swansea striker looked out of his depth against Portugal, and was totally isolated up front. Those two factors combined meant he had a nightmare outing against the European champions which will have put him far down in the estimations of many Scotland fans, as evidenced here. It is a shame to see such a young player getting ripped to shreds like this though, with criticism such as this not helping much at all. The fact is that the whole Scotland team were totally outclassed by the Portuguese, and there were very few players who actually emerged with any credit. All in all it has been a chastening international break for Alex McLeish and his squad, who have vast improvements to make if they are to get anywhere close to qualifying for an international tournament.
