Aston Villa are set to try and arrange talks between chief executive Christian Purslow and Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers this week as they continue their hunt for a new manager, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claim on their website on Monday that the Villa man has already been in talks with a number of potential appointments but that the top brass are keen on the Hoops’ boss and that they are hoping to convince last season’s Scottish Premiership winner to meet about taking charge of the Championship side.

As well as Rodgers, who has six trophies to his name at Celtic, Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has also been named as another on the shortlist of candidates, the Premier League boss currently sitting in sixth with the Cherries.

Opinion

Rodgers and Howe are both massively ambitious and it seems as though the club want to get a top quality manager with plenty of experience under their belt to fill the void left by Steve Bruce. However, both are doing well with their respective sides and convincing them to leave their current club to head to Villa Park would be a seriously difficult task placed on the shoulders of Purslow. Does this mean that he is not satisfied with the other candidates, including Thierry Henry, that he has supposedly spoken to already? It could be that while they are impressive when inĀ  face-to-face talks, a lack of experience in the dugout is making the club wary as they look to reignite their promotion bid before the end of the season. This is a big decision to make and while the right one could lead to glory, the wrong one may just have them sitting in mid-table obscurity in the Championship.
