Liverpool star Andy Robertson believes that Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor is the only player who should not be dropped after their 2-1 defeat to Israel.

Robertson has admitted that those 90 minutes was the worst performance he had ever put out when representing Scotland, and said that all of the ten outfield players that were playing in that fixture should be “looking over their shoulders” – apart from McGregor.

He labelled the Gers’ stopper as “outstanding” despite the defeat, and added that McGregor was the only player who demonstrated that he could play at the best of his ability.

“The gaffer picked the same starting XI as against Albania but will that stay the same for the next qualifier? If I was him I would be doubting every position because none of us showed up apart from Greegs, who kept the score down,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“He was outstanding but other than that I don’t think anyone played to their capabilities. So we’re all under pressure and the lads on the bench can see that and know that there are places up for grabs.”

OPINION

McGregor must be revelling in the fact that his national teammate has hailed him in the way that he has. Robertson is right though – the keeper was the only player who deserves an admirable mention after that clash. He arguably kept Scotland in the game, and it was because of him that the score remained at only 2-1. He has been rather decent for Rangers recently, and Scotland were lucky that he was able to maintain that form for his country, otherwise they would have been severely embarrassed. He is the only player who deserves to keep the jersey for their next encounter, and there is no doubt that Gers boss Steven Gerrard would have taken notice of his comments. He has the best goalkeeper in Scotland amongst his ranks – and McGregor will obviously be keen to impress the manager upon his return to club duties.
