Alan Shearer has singled out three Tottenham players for their roles in England’s 3-2 win over Spain on Monday.

It was England’s most impressive win for years and Tottenham players were at the heart of the action.

Shearer started his column in the Sun by saying he couldn’t remember the last time he was so excited about watching England play and said people would still be talking about it in ten years’ time.

The former England striker praised the midfield after many people had feared they would be overrun.

“Harry Winks and Eric Dier’s protection in front of the back-four was magnificent and their passing was superb.

“And every single player played their part. For example, Kieran Trippier did so well stopping balls coming into the box from wide areas.”

Shearer also talked about Harry Kane, saying his lack of goals for his country was just an issue of “form”.

“Before the game, it was all about Harry Kane supposedly being knackered. But that was just people looking for excuses about why he had not scored for England for six games. Why can’t people just accept that is form? That is the life of a forward. It  happens.

“He is scoring for Tottenham, so there is no issue.”

OPINION

Dele Alli must have been watching the England game and wondering whether he’d get straight back into the side when he returns from injury. The majority of England fans would have expecting to lose and hoping to come away with a draw. No one would have predicted England would have been 3-0 by half-time and, despite a nervy finish, they held onto win 3-2. England fans will know all about Eric Dier and Kieran Trippier. Dier might not be their favourite player but he’s a hugely effective player when he’s on it. The big surprise for a lot of people – Tottenham fans excepted – would have been Harry Winks. He proved on Monday that he’s got a big part to play in the future of England football and could help in bringing our first trophy home since 1966 in the 2020 Euros. Too soon? Possibly, but in the meantime we can watch this game back and relish a historic win against one of the best sides in the world.
