Many Newcastle United fans on social media fumed over report that claimed the club were considering sacking Rafa Benitez and that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers could potentially succeed him.

The Daily Mirror reported that the Hoops senior man was set to be a possible successor for Benitez if the Magpies manager couldn’t turn around the side’s current form.

The newspaper claimed that the Magpies’ next three games would be pivotal in deciding Benitez’s future and fans weren’t keen that the Spaniard could soon leave with Rodgers rocking up to replace him.

One Magpies supporter tweeted that it would be a nightmare if the Celtic manager took over from Benitez at St James Park, while another stated they’d be done with the club after 52 years of supporting them.

OPINION

It is well-known that lots of Magpies fans will be fuming if Benitez departs their club whether he is pushed or walks of his own accord, yet it seems they’ll be even more incense if Rodgers replaces him. Despite the 45-year-old having a packed trophy cabinet from his time at the Hoops, a large section of Magpies supporters are not convinced by his qualities. One boldly claimed that if the Magpies got rid of Benitez for Rodgers then it would be the worse mistake ever made, and that seems ridiculously harsh. The current Celtic senior man went close to winning the Premier League with Liverpool and oversaw Swansea City playing beautiful football in the division, so there’s definitely worst options for the club to take. However given that Rodgers seems ambitious and sometimes frustrated over Celtic not spending big, then it’s hard to see him being happy under Mike Ashley who won’t loosen the purse strings.
