Norwich are in the hunt to sign “gifted” Everton midfielder Antony Evans, according to the Sun on Sunday.

The newspaper claimed via their print edition [Sunday October 14, page 61] that the Championship club wants to sign the 20-year-old on loan in the January transfer window, however the Toffees want assurances that he will play regular first team football after a disappointing spell at Morecambe two seasons ago.

Evans has been in good form for Everton’s Under-23s this season, scoring three goals in seven Premier League 2 appearances.

Good move for Everton?

If Evans goes to Carrow Road and gets plenty of game-time then it is definitely worthwhile letting him go out on loan for the second half of the season.

However the England youth international is yet to play at that level and if he fails to impress in his first few games for Norwich, then he could easily be dropped to the fringes of their squad and return to Merseyside next summer with just a handful of appearances under his belt.

It would be a good idea to include penalties in Evans’ loan contract so Norwich have to pay the Premier League side a certain amount if he is not paying.

Liverpool have reportedly done that in the past so it is a good idea for the Toffees to try and replicate.

Likely to happen?

Evans is playing well in the Under-23s at the moment but there is no substitute for first team experience.

The 20-year-old is clearly highly-rated among the staff at Finch Farm as they are reportedly making sure that his loan exit is one that will work well for him.

It could happen but there is still a while to go before January.
