A group of very wealthy business tycoons from the United States are plotting a takeover of Newcastle United to take the club to the “next level”, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim on their website that the Magpies are now the target of two groups of potential investors but that the new interested party, made up of American businessmen, have serious funds behind them, with British businessman Peter Kenyon said to still be seeking investment from abroad to help back his bid for the club.

It is stated that the American suitors want to turn Newcastle into a competitive side and take them to the next level on a global scale, and the newspaper’s source touted a fee of £300million for the takeover and another £100million for Rafael Benitez to spend in the January transfer market.

Opinion

Is this another false dawn to get the Newcastle fans’ hopes up once again, or is this the real deal? Fans have got to hope it is the latter, for Mike Ashley’s running of the club is simply leaving them languishing at the bottom of the Premier League, a far cry from the 10th placed finish that Benitez and his men managed to pull off last season. The prospect of new owners, especially those with some serious financial clout, is enough to have the Toon Army drooling and dreaming of a brighter future at St James’ Park. However, Ashley has reportedly hinted that he would not be willing to sell up this season, and with the club struggling in the top flight, it is stated that the threat of relegation could harm their chances of securing a takeover deal. As such, the Magpies need to lift their game and launch themselves away from the bottom three – then a deal could well be on the cards and Ashley could be one step closer to walking away.
