Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed that he expects the club to take up an option to extend his contract by another year.

The 31-year-old Belgium international is out of contract at Spurs next summer and is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with non-English sides in January.

Senior star Vertonghen has however made the major revelation that the club have an option to extend his deal by one more year, and the centre-back believes that the club will do so.

Speaking while on international duty with Belgium, as quoted by journalist Kristof Terreur on Twitter, Vertonghen said: “My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year.

“I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens.”

OPINION

This is huge news for Tottenham fans after worries began to spread yesterday about Vertonghen’s contract. The fact that the Belgian stalwart’s deal ends next summer seemed to have been lost on many supporters, and once it came to light, panic seemed to spread as the reality of the situation dawned on many. Vertonghen has been one of the club’s best performers over the past three seasons, and to lose him for free next summer would be a huge blow with massive consequences. With the trouble surrounding Toby Alderweireld over the past season, Vertonghen has stepped up to become a huge player at the back for Spurs, so to lose him now would be a blow of major significance for Tottenham. The revelation that the club have an option for an extra year is a relief, but hopefully they will go further than that. Vertonghen needs to be offered a new long-term deal, one which puts him on par with the club’s top earners like Harry Kane. The Belgium international is worth every penny, and Spurs cannot afford to lose him.
