It is fair to say that in comparison to last season, there is much more optimism and hope around Rangers all courtesy of Steven Gerrard and his new look squad – but unfortunately for the former Liverpool man, the problems of the old campaign continue to rear their head.

There were a number of controversies with which the Gers had to deal with from last summer both on and off the field, from Pedro Caixinha’s woeful signings, their embarrassing Europa League qualifying defeat to Progres Niederkorn or their failed hunt to replace the Portuguese boss properly.

However, the biggest issue the club faced was the aftermath of the reported bust up between manager Graeme Murty and senior stars Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace which resulted in the first team pair being suspended and then fined for their actions, although an appeal to the league board means that the case has been running on into the current campaign.

That looks to end soon enough though, with the Daily Record claiming that the SPFL have decided in favour of the duo in the ongoing dispute, and Rangers must launch an inquest into how the controversial episode was dealt with and how the appeal has been successful.

Those in the firing line must be the club chiefs, whose decisions last season has brought a dark cloud over Ibrox at a time of hope for the Light Blues, and some sort of closure must be found with Wallace still part of the first team setup.

This shows up the Rangers board once again for their decision making, and it is a blot in the copybook for what had been a good couple of months.
