Josh Windass has raved about Rangers rising star Stephen Kelly and claimed he will be the next breakthrough player at Ibrox.

In a question-and-answer session on his personal Instagram account on Thursday, former Ger Windass hailed midfielder Kelly, 18, as “technically the best young player by a mile” at the club.

Kelly has been included in several matchday squads by Steven Gerrard but has yet to make his senior Rangers debut.

OPINION

Windass might not always have been the most popular Rangers player during his two years at the club, but his opinion will be respected by most supporters who recognise what an impact he made for the team last season. Windass scored 18 goals in 2017-18 before agreeing a £2million transfer to Wigan Athletic and a return south of the border. His huge claim about Kelly’s technical ability will excite Rangers fans eager for the academy to produce a genuine first-team talent. Many hoped Billy Gilmour would be that player before his controversial move to Chelsea last year. Kelly, who has been capped by Scotland at Under-19 level, was a standout for the Gers U-20 side last season as they embarked on their games programme, scoring against a host of top sides including Man United, Man City and Bayern Munich. He joined the Rangers senior squad on their pre-season tour of Spain and there is real hope among the club’s hierarchy that he can make it at first-team level.
