Broadcaster: Middleton to start v Ayr

|

Glenn Middleton is set to make his full Rangers debut in their Scottish League Cup clash against Ayr United tomorrow night (Wednesday), according to a broadcaster and journalist.

Bill Young, who presents Scottish station Rock Sport and is a reliable source of Gers news, reported on his personal Twitter account today that Middleton, 18, will make his first start for the club in the quarter-final at Ibrox.

Young explained that there will be plenty of fresh talent on show and there will also be a major role for Cammy Palmer, 18, who he knows Steven Gerrard rates highly and “expects great things of him”.

As Gerrard’s assistant Gary McAllister pointed out today, the schedule for Rangers has been “manic” since they started in June, with an exhausting Europa League qualifying programme ensuring the fixtures have come thick and fast. The clash against minnows Ayr will be less intense than those against the likes of Villarreal and St Johnstone in recent times, and provides the ideal opportunity to blood the next generation of Ibrox stars. Middleton has already earned minutes from the bench for the senior side and impressed with a cameo against Villarreal in Spain. He fully deserves his first start for the club and it will be fascinating to see if he can replicate his impact as a sub. As for Palmer, the central midfielder is yet to make his senior Rangers bow. He has earned rave reviews for his youth team performances and will hope he gets the chance to strut his stuff and impress Gerrard and McAllister tomorrow.
