A section of football fans took to Twitter to lay into Erik Lamela for his performance in their side’s 2-1 Champions League defeat to Inter Milan on Tuesday night.

The Argentine was handed his first start of the season as Mauricio Pochettino made five changes from the weekend defeat to Liverpool but late goals from Mauro Icardi and Matias Vecino cancelled out Christian Eriksen’s opener.

Lamela played 72 minutes of the clash in Milan before he was replaced by Harry Winks and many football followers, including a good number of Spurs ones, were unhappy with his performance.

COMMENTARY:

Five years into his Tottenham career and Lamela divides opinion like few other players. Not just among Spurs supporters, either. The attacking midfielder, who earns £70,000-a-week at the club (source: Daily Star), was named in the starting XI for the first time this season at San Siro as Pochettino introduced fresh legs into the attack. The Argentine did not finish the game but looked more effective after the break following a fairly ineffective first period. Intriguingly, Lamela played ahead of Harry Kane for much of the match in what was a tactical surprise. With Kane continually dropping deep to win the ball, the older man was used in a similar way to how Lucas Moura has operated this season, as the most forward attacker charged with getting beyond defenders. It was not really a tactic that worked, perhaps because Lamela does not have the stunning change of pace of the Brazilian.
