A section of fans have hailed Mousa Dembele for his performance for Belgium just days after he was savaged by many Tottenham supporters.

The central midfielder, 31, played 85 minutes for his national team on Friday night as they strolled to a convincing 4-0 win against Scotland at Hampden Park.

Dembele was roundly praised on social media by supporters of various clubs, with comments including “pure class”, “beast” and “the big guy can play”.

COMMENTARY:

In the opinionated world of social media, where a player is a hero one minute and a flop the next, sensible verdicts are not always commonplace. Spurs fans have spent much of the post-mortem of their team’s defeat at Watford a week ago debating the merits of Dembele and where he fits into their team going forward. Many of them claim he should be pushed out by Mauricio Pochettino as he has already begun a downward spiral. That appeared harsh and somewhat over-the-top, given Dembele’s unique combination of power, grit and guile. Pretty much every Premier League club would love to have a central midfielder of such experience and obvious technical quality in their ranks. That was certainly the impression Dembele gave on Friday night as he delivered a sumptuous display against Scotland that emphasised that form is temporary and class is permanent.
