Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is in talks to sign a new long-term contract that will bring his pay in line with the club’s first team stars, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim the 21-year-old is to be rewarded for his outstanding start to the new season even though he has four years left on his current agreement.

The Mirror report that Gomez will be handed a lucrative long-term deal and he is expected to put pen to paper imminently.

OPINION

Given that Gomez is currently on a fringe player salary – stats site Spotrac claim he earns £10,000-a-week, around the same as the likes of loaned-out rookies Ben Woodburn and Sheyi Ojo – it is high time his pay is brought more in line with the club’s big names. Gomez isn’t an established star quit yet, but he is well on the way to achieving that status after a brilliant month in which he has been catapulted into the limelight. The former Charlton player has seized the opportunity granted by injuries to Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip to start all four of Liverpool’s Premier League matches as well as England’s 2-1 defeat to Spain last night. Gomez has delivered a series of Rolls-Royce performances and looks to have the skills and mentality to be a centre-back fixture for club and country for many years. The biggest compliment you can pay Gomez is that Lovren and Matop face a huge battle to force him out of the starting XI.
