A section of Arsenal fans took to Twitter to annihilate Mohamed Elneny for his performance in their team’s 3-1 League Cup triumph against Brentford on Wednesday night.

The Egypt international was partnered in central midfield by Matteo Guendouzi and was even pushed forward into a number 10 role when Lucas Torreira came on in the second half.

Many supporters were underwhelmed by the performance of Elneny with comments including “never again” and “get rid”.

COMMENTARY:

Following the summer signings of Torreira and Guendouzi, Elneny has slipped down the central midfield pecking order at Arsenal. He has yet to be given a minute of Premier League action this season and, with Granit Xhaka the first choice in that position, there is no immediate sign of that changing. The Egyptian played 84 minutes against Brentford before he was replaced by Aaron Ramsey in the number 10 role he had taken on late in the game following Torreira’s arrival. It is fair to say this did not suit him, as Arsenal fans made plain on social media. Elneny has been at Arsenal nearly three years, but he still does not seem totally in sync with those around him. He is energetic and powerful, and does many good things, but he’s also lax and the pace of the Premier League does seem too much for him at times. Don’t expect him to feature against Watford at the weekend after this performance.
