Chris Sutton believes Celtic showed “good character” after they bounced back from their Champions League heartbreak with a comfortable 3-1 win over Partick Thistle in the Betfred Cup on Saturday.

Goals from Leigh Griffiths, Moussa Dembele and Tom Rogic saw the Hoops through against the Jags at Firhill as Brendan Rodgers’ men put their Champions League exit to AEK Athens behind them.

Sutton has now delivered an instant verdict on the win over Thistle, saying that the treble was still on for the Hoops who he believes showed good character to bounce back with a win.

OPINION

Sutton is obviously happy with Celtic’s performance against Partick Thistle on Saturday afternoon, and it is clear to see why. There was no suggestion of any European hangover despite such a disappointing result in midweek, and that was the most important thing. If the Hoops had let their Champions League exit carry over into the rest of the season then Brendan Rodgers would have had a serious problem on his hands. Instead they have put it behind them and moved on, with their dominance in the Betfred Cup showing once again. The Jags were game opposition and put themselves in the picture with a second-half equaliser, but the Hoops killed off any hopes of a comeback with ruthless efficiency after late goals from Dembele and Rogic. The manner of the late win will please Rodgers, whose team could easily have crumpled under the pressure of their midweek exit after that equaliser.
