Tottenham made an offer for left winger Ryan Sessegnon that was rejected by Fulham, according to BBC journalist David Ornstein.

The reliable correspondent reported on his personal Twitter account ahead of deadline day that Spurs proposed a swap deal for Sessegnon in which Danny Rose would go the other way.

Ornstein explained that Tottenham want to offload Rose and his teammate Toby Alderweireld, but failed to reach an agreement and the 18-year-old will now be remaining at Craven Cottage this summer.

OPINION

Credit to Tottenham for making a push for Sessegnon, but it was always doomed to failure, unless there was a massive sum of cash offered to Fulham as well as Rose. Given Spurs’ cautious conduct this summer, that is unlikely. Tottenham once valued Rose at £55million, but his price tag has come down – perhaps by £20million – following 18 months in which he has struggled to recover from a knee injury that kept him out for half that time. Sessegnon is 10 years younger and has the potential to be 10 times good. He started out as a left-back at Fulham, but has subsequently developed into a left winger so good that he was named the Championship player of the season in 2017-18 after his 16 goals from 52 matches helped catapult the Cottagers back into the Premier League. Sessegnon is good enough to continue his remarkable upward curve in the top flight this campaign and Fulham have done brilliantly to hold on to their astonishingly precocious academy product.
