Boateng deal paves way for Alderweireld exit – report

|

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has agreed personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain to pave the way for Toby Alderweireld to replace him at the German giants, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claim Alderweireld, 29, could be headed to the Allianz Arena as a direct replacement for World Cup winner Boateng after failing to join Manchester United before the Premier League window closed last week.

The Mirror report £50million-valued Boateng is close to joining PSG this month and the Spurs man is on Bayern’s shortlist of centre-backs to replace him.

Good move for Tottenham?

No, definitely not. Alderweireld could attract a fee of up to £50million, but he is an outstanding centre-back and his exit would weaken the Spurs squad at a time when they are unable to find a replacement. Mauricio Pochettino is well stocked when it comes to quality players in that position, with Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez, the versatile Eric Dier and rising stars Cameron Carter-Vickers and Juan Foyth on the first-team books. But even Vertonghen must bow down to Alderweireld, the best centre-back in the Premier League since joining from Atletico Madrid three years ago. Against the best teams and strongest forwards, Spurs need Alderweireld fit and firing.

Likely to happen?

It is certainly possible, but Pochettino has promised Alderweireld a clean slate following his contract snub earlier this year and it is telling that he was named in the matchday squad for last Saturday’s win at Newcastle. Spurs might cash in on the Belgian, but they would have to wait to January at least to replace him.
