Southampton are in the hunt to sign Toulouse centre-back Christopher Jullien, according to Get French Football News.

The French news outlet claims that clubs from the Bundesliga and in England have been in talks to sign Jullien, 25, as the 6ft 4in (transfermarkt) colossus mulls over his next move.

Southampton are the only club mentioned in the report to be in pursuit of the former France Under-20 international, while earlier this summer La Depeche has claimed that Crystal Palace and Burnley are also eyeing up the £8.9million-rated defender.

Good move for Southampton?

Mark Hughes has already added to his defence this summer by signing Jannik Vestergaard, while he also has a number of other options that he can play at centre-back including Maya Yoshida, Jan Bednarek, Wesley Hoedt and Jack Stephens.

It would be a bit of a waste of money to go after Jullien in that respect, especially as he hardly impressed with Toulouse last season.

He made 36 appearances across all competitions for the Ligue 1 club, featuring in heavy defeats against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bordeaux and Lille.

In fact Toulouse’s defensive form looked a bit better when he was sidelined.

This is a deal that the Saints should not be looking to complete.

Likely to happen?

It seems that a lot of clubs are interested in signing Jullien and given the fact that Hughes already has plenty of centre-back options, a move for the Frenchman does not seem very likely.

The £8.9million that Toulouse want for the 25-year-old is better off being pumped into upgrading the attack.
