Joe Worrall is poised to undergo a Rangers medical after Steven Gerrard personally assured Nottingham Forest he will get regular playing time, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim the England Under-21 international defender is set to join the influx of new arrivals at Ibrox this summer ahead of Friday’s Scottish window deadline.

The Mail report that Worrall will join forward Eros Grezda in becoming the final signings at Rangers and will finalise a season-long loan move in the next 48 hours.

Good move for Rangers?

Worrall is a sensible and potentially excellent acquisition. He has slipped to fifth-choice centre-back at Forest, but that can partly be attributed to a £20million summer spending spree as the club chase promotion. It is not a measure of the three-times England Under-21 man’s ability and potential. The Forest academy product is a commanding defender standing at 6ft 3in (source: Transfermarkt) who already has extensive experience in the English Championship. He was so impressive in 35 appearances in all competitions last season that Burnley bid £10million for him earlier this year. With Gerrard in need of defensive reinforcements, despite the impact made by Goldson, Katic and Jon Flanagan in the first six weeks of the season, this could be another shrewd Gers deal.

Likely to happen?

Forest have had their reservations about sending Worrall to Scotland, but it appears that Gerrard has smooth-talked Spanish opposite number Aitor Karanka into sanctioning the loan. That means it is only a matter of time before the player is unveiled as Rangers’ final signing of a whirlwind summer.
