Rangers have tried to sign Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam this summer, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The newspaper claim the Scottish giants “showed interest” in re-signing their academy product “earlier this summer” but concede a move back to Glasgow for the player now appears unlikely.

The Telegraph report Adam, 32, has been told by Stoke manager Gary Rowett he is free to leave the Championship club this month after being deemed surplus to requirements.

Good move for Rangers?

Adam would be a brilliant summer signing for Rangers. His passing range, eye for goal (34 from 207 Premier League matches is an impressive return) and brilliant set pieces make him a formidable player and he could certainly be an upgrade on any of the central midfielders in the current squad. The 26-times Scotland international certainly understands the pressure and expectation that go with being a Ger. He came through the ranks at Ibrox after joining from Dundee in his teens and made 76 appearances for the club before heading south of the border to Blackpool in 2009. Adam’s best days may be behind him but he is still a force to be reckoned with.

Likely to happen

It’s certainly possible, as Adam has entered the final 12 months of his contract at relegation-threatened Stoke and is well out of the first-team picture. He did not make the matchday squad for the opening two Championship matches of the season and the reliable Telegraph report he doesn’t have a future at the Bet365 Stadium. Would he be willing to take a hefty wage cut to return to Ibrox? It is certainly possible, but dont get your hopes up too much, Rangers fans.
