Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is piling pressure on contractors every morning as he tries to unblock the club’s stadium hold-ups, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the long-standing Spurs chief is “livid” at the delays that have ended the Londoners’ hopes of unveiling their 62,000-seater new ground against Liverpool on 15 September.

Tottenham announced on Monday evening they have taken up an option to continue playing their home matches at Wembley beyond this weekend’s fixture with Fulham and Levy is working round the clock pushing everyone involved to work harder.

“Every morning he monitors progress from high up in his office at Lilywhite House, where the club’s admin is housed,” the Sun report. “Levy puts in furious phone calls and thrashes away at his laptop, sending irate emails about the lack of progress.”

OPINION

Little wonder Tottenham didn’t buy any players this summer as they become the first club since the Premier League window came into operation in 2003 to fail to do so. Levy has been otherwise engaged. The attention of the all-powerful chairman, who has privately talked about delegating transfer and contract negotiating in recent years without actually doing so, has been focused not on strengthening Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, but dealing with the fall-out of stadium delays that have heaped embarrassment on the club and cost them another heap of money. Levy is now trying to deliver the magnificent new structure before the calendar year is out, something that is certainly not guaranteed given the issues that have come to light in the last 24 hours. The chairman must also take responsibility for failing to keep fans in the picture. As the Sun report, he has known for some time the stadium was well behind schedule. Quite why the board failed to inform supporters until Monday is a mystery that needs explaining.
