Lee Hodson is set to end his two-year spell at Rangers as he closes in on a transfer to Montreal impact before the MLS window shuts tomorrow (Wednesday), according to Football Insider.

The reliable site claim the defender, 26, is jetting out to the other side of the Atlantic to undergo a medical with the Canadian club after being offered a contract.

Football Insider report that manager Steven Gerrard has given the green light for the full-back to find a new club following the capture today of Croatian left-back Borna Barisic for a fee of £2.2million.

OPINION

What is certain is there will be few tears shed at the imminent departure of the limited defender. Hodson may have been capped 23 times by Northern Ireland but he has forever been on the fringes in Glasgow and his time is now up after the signings this summer of Barisic and Jon Flanagan. Hodson cannot have too many complaints (although the same can’t be said of Declan John, who has been the collateral damage of a huge defensive overhaul), although it is worth remembering the fanfare generated following his arrival from MK Dons in the summer of 2016. Ex-boss Mark Warburton positively drooled. “I was amazed Lee was not still playing at English Championship level — or even higher,” Warburton said via the Daily Mail about the defender. Not for the first time, the judgement of the former Brentford and Nottingham Forest manager has been left open to serious question. Hodson has been a Rangers flop, making just 27 appearances in two seasons and doing little to suggest he could ever be anything other than a second rate back-up in the two full-back positions. With a year left on his contract, Rangers will do well to get a fee for the player.
