Tottenham have shaved £20million off the asking price for Danny Rose after failing to find a buyer for him this summer, according to the Independent.

The sports site claim the north London club wanted £55million for the England international and Chelsea made progress on signing him for that sum last August.

The Independent report that Rose’s price has now come down to £35million but even that has not been enough to secure  sale for the left-back, although he may be sold cut-price to an overseas club later in the window.

OPINION

The Independent report makes it clear Spurs need to sell before they can buy, and this explains why they are the only club in the Premier League not to bring in any new blood yet this summer. Quite why the Londoners are so keen to cash in on Rose is something of a mystery. Sure, he has failed to recapture his form of January 2017, when his huge progress under Mauricio Pochettino was cruelly halted by a knee injury that sidelined him for nine months. But, when fit and firing, the defender is far superior to Ben Davies, who lacks his pace and attacking threat. Tottenham are not so swelled by top-class players that they can afford to offload a key man who should be at his peak – Rose turned 28 last month – and can still make a big impact in the upcoming season. If Rose were to leave, who would replace him? Is Davies so good he doesn’t need a quality back-up? Certainly not. Tottenham’s transfer activity is understandable, given the stadium costs, but no less worrying as a result.
