A broadcaster publicly slated by Chris Sutton has delivered an extraordinary anti-Celtic rant on talkSPORT today (Wednesday) urging Brendan Rodgers to quit the “Scottish Pub League” and return south of the border.

The national radio station’s Ian Abrahams took to the airwaves on the Alan Brazil Breakfast Show this morning to lay into the Glasgow giants following their elimination from the Champions League last night.

“There is absolutely no point any more in Brendan Rodgers twice a season beating Hamilton and Kilmarnock, St Johnstone and even Rangers and Aberdeen. What is the point,” Abrahams said on talkSPORT.

“The SPL has always stood for one thing and one thing only: ‘The Scottish Pub League’. Celtic’s record in Europe is poor. Last night, they once again showed it is pointless in even taking part in European competition.

“Brendan must come back to England now. There is no point in him staying there and winning ten in a row. What does that achieve?

“What is ten Scottish titles in a row going to mean on his CV? Outstanding, well done mate. It must be so hard to beat Ross County and Inverness Caledonian Thistle four times a season.”

Abrahams’ diatribe comes after he was burned by former Hoops striker Sutton on social media last night after mocking Celtic for failing to reach the Champions League group stages.

OPINION

Is it any wonder that many Scottish men and women cheered when England were eliminated from the World Cup, given ill-conceived and poorly-researched SPL rants like Abraham’s? Mocking Celtic’s ten-in-a-row ambitions and back-to-back trebles is not uncommon south of the border. But it is ridiculous to put down the achievements of Rodgers and his club while ignoring the facts. The northern Irishman has worked wonders at Celtic, delivering six major trophies with a team playing attractive, front-foot football in front of sell-out Parkhead crowds and steering them twice into the Champions League. Sure, Celtic have not made much of an impact in Europe – and that will hurt Rodgers – but finishing third in a group last season that included Paris-Saint Germain, Bayern Munich and Anderlecht was hardly an epic blunder. Rodgers’ reputation has been enhanced by his work at Celtic, and anyone who watches Scottish football closely will understand that.
