Celtic defender Cristian Gamboa has vowed to fight for his place after revealing how happy he is to be at the club.

The 28-year-old right-back’s current Hoops contract expires in May 2019 and the Daily Record report that he faces uncertainty over his future at the club due to spending so much of his 2017/18 campaign on the sidelines.

Despite the uncertainty over his future Gamboa shared that he had every intention of remaining with the Hoops as he stated that he would be very happy if he got to stay one more year at the club.

“I still have one year on my contract and I’ve always said my family are happy here,” said Gamboa as quoted by the Daily Record.

“I’m happy as it’s a fantastic club and I always give my best.

“I just have to keep going. Playing for Celtic is one of the best clubs in my career.

“If I stay for one more year, I’m going to be happy.”

OPINION

While there may be still time remaining for Gamboa to depart in the current transfer window, it seems unlikely that the right-back will be packing his bags anytime soon. The 28-year-old put in a fantastic display during the 3-1 win over Partick Thistle in the League Cup at the weekend and reminded everyone that he could still be a useful player for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Given that getting rid of Gamboa before the transfer window slams shut wouldn’t exactly see a huge lot of money raked in from his sale, then it doesn’t seem like it would be a smart decision to part company with him just yet. The right-back clearly loves life at the club by his vow to fight for his place and should be handed the 2018/19 season to see if he can warrant being handed a new deal. Gamboa may have struggled to make a memorable impression last season due to injuries but if he proves he can stay fit during the current campaign then there is no need to question his future at the club.
