Josh Windass is headed for talks with Wigan Athletic following a late twist in an all-English bidding war for the Rangers player, according to a reliable journalist.

STV correspondent Raman Bhardwaj reported on his personal Twitter account early on Thursday afternoon that Wigan have stolen a march on Ipswich Town, the other Championship club keen to sign him.

Bhardwaj explained that Rangers have accepted a bid of £2.5million plus add-ons from the Championship new boys.

OPINION

Windass divides opinion among Rangers fans, many of whom regard him as maddeningly inconsistent and not quite as good as he thinks he is. Certainly, the Englishman has a bit of a strut and, after some of his performances last season, that was also understandable. Windass scored 18 goals and supplied eight assists from 41 appearances in all competitions in what was comfortably the best season of his career. Aged 24, he is yet to reach his peak and has the ability to be a mighty fine addition to any Championship club, and possibly even reach Premier League level in the years to come. Are Rangers letting him go too cheaply? Yes, they are. An initial £2.5million is a profit of £2.4million on the player signed from Accrington by ex-boss Mark Warburton but that is not big money in the current market. Perhaps Steven Gerrard doesn’t fancy him too much, although Windass did play the full 90 minutes of the opening-day 1-1 draw against Aberdeen last weekend.
