Newcastle United are prepared to make a cash bid for Wolverhampton Wanderers’ winger Ivan Cavaleiro as they look to bolster their attack before the transfer deadline, according to TEAMtalk.

The football news website claim that the Magpies are eyeing up a number of potential new recruits to add to their forward line and that manager Rafael Benitez is a big fan of the 24-year-old at Molineux.

He was a key member of the squad which secured the Championship title last season, scoring nine times and assisting 13 for his team mates to contribute to a total of 22 goals across his 46 appearances in all competitions.

It is said that the cash bid could tempt Wolves, who themselves are reportedly plotting more moves before Thursday’s deadline as they prepare to rival Newcastle in the Premier League.

Good move for Newcastle United?

Tricky one really, for it is difficult to see where he would fit into Benitez’s plans – unless someone was to leave.

With Kenedy having returned on another loan spell to join Matt Ritchie, Jacob Murphy and Christian Atsu – all of which have been used in pre-season – a man of Cavaleiro’s talents is hardly needed right now.

If Newcastle are preparing a bid, they would be better off investing that money elsewhere and ensuring that Benitez has options all across the pitch – perhaps finding a new left back to battle with Paul Dummett.

If someone leaves to fund Cavaleiro’s capture, then it might be a good move, but for now, it seems unnecessary.

Likely to happen?

As stated before, a senior exit seems the only way for this one to go ahead, and with hours left of the summer window, it seems unlikely to happen.

A loan spell cannot even be on the cards, Newcastle already having the maximum of two loanees on their books, so it is now or never for Benitez, and it will probably be the latter.
