Tottenham have made a secret payment to the FA so they can play at Wembley until the end of the year after concerns over their new stadium, according to the Sun.

Spurs were originally set to start this season at their new home but delays meant they would have to play the first few games of the season away from home.

Now, the Sun has reported that Daniel Levy has activated an option to play home games at Wembley until the end of 2018.

That would mean that the grand opening of the stadium, which was set for September 15 against Liverpool might not happen.

An FA official was quoted as saying: “Spurs have taken up the option to come to Wembley for a number of Premier League home games and the home games in the group stage of the Champions League.

“However, it is still their intention to play their home games at White Hart Lane after the Fulham game (at Wembley).”

OPINION

This doesn’t come as a massive surprise – huge building projects like this rarely come without delays – but it will be a big blow to Tottenham and their supporters. The sooner they can get into their new stadium and make it their home, the better. Much was made of the Wembley curse but Spurs put that to bed last season with a thumping campaign that saw them finish third. That brings Champions League football again, but the summer was quiet and there’s real concern among fans that the stadium means their side can’t afford to strengthen their side. Mauricio Pochettino said that it was because they couldn’t find any players to improve their squad, but after a protracted and failed campaign to land Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, no one really believes that. One bit of good news is that the report doesn’t say the stadium opening has definitely been delayed and this could be just cover in case the worst happens.
