Serie B club Crotone have contacted Nottingham Forest about a potential move for defender Thomas Lam, according to Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The reporter claimed via his personal website that Crotone are looking to shore up their defence and have turned their attention to Lam, 24, as it seems as though he is not in Aitor Karanka’s first team plans this season.

The 17-times capped Finland international spent last term on loan at Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie and since returning to the East Midlands he has not made any of Karanka’s match-day squads.

Good move for Nottingham Forest?

Lam has never really fitted in at Forest and it will certainly be a good move for all parties in the 24-year-old was to be offloaded this summer.

As Italian clubs can still sign players, the centre-back could potentially leave the City Ground on a permanent basis if a decent enough offer was made but for someone who is well down the pecking order, it may just be a case of cutting losses for the Reds.

Lam managed to make 30 appearances in all competitions during his loan spell at Twente, who were relegated from the Eredivise last season just eight years after winning it.

Karanka probably sees him as playing a role in that and doesn’t want him near his squad.

Likely to happen?

Crotone are hardly a team with a strong budget, but Forest may want to just get rid of Lam as soon as possible to get him off the wagebill.

It does seem as though he might leave the City Ground before the end of the month, but a move to Serie B doesn’t seem the likeliest having spent most of his career in the Netherlands.

A move back to the Eredivise is perhaps more likely.
