Tottenham have already had enough trouble when it comes to contracts and transfers in the shape of Toby Alderweireld, so they will no doubt want to avoid the same situation when it comes to star attacker Christian Eriksen.

The 26-year-old playmaker has a contract until 2020 in north London, meaning next summer will see him enter the final year of his current deal – and the Daily Mail claim that movement in negotiations between the club and the player are slow moving.

The Lilywhites obviously want to keep him – he has been crucial to their efforts over the past couple of seasons – but at the same time do not want to be held to ransom by his demands, which could mean not only selling him to another club but having to find a replacement, for there is no one who offers the same qualities as the Dane.

However, the Manchester Evening News claim that Spurs made an enquiry to Premier League rivals Manchester United for both Anthony Martial and Juan Mata, and the Spanish star is exactly the sort of player who could fill Eriksen’s boots with ease.

If Tottenham do not get an answer from Eriksen over a new deal in the next couple of months, they could well find themselves forced to ship him out and bring Mata in – which would by no means be a bad swap, but a disappointing one for the Spurs faithful who adore their current maestro.

The Lilywhites have already got themselves in a pickle over one man’s contract and they will not be allowing the same to happen again, and so the Danish star has to seal his future or face the boot.
