Ivan Toney has agreed to join Peterborough from Newcastle United for a “substantial” six-figure fee, it has been confirmed.

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed on his personal Twitter account early on deadline day that his club had sealed a deal for the striker.

MacAnthony explained that Toney, 22, has ended this three-year spell at St James’ Park after penning a three-year contract with the League One club.

OPINION

What a coup for Peterborough. Toney might not be a Premier League-calibre front man who is the answer to Newcastle’s needs for firepower and goals in the new season, but he should make a huge impact in the third tier of English football. Toney has demonstrated during six different loan spells at four separate clubs in recent years that he can score prolifically in the lower leagues. He has netted 25 times in 89 League One matches, including 14 from 46 matches for Wigan Athletic and Scunthorpe last season. Toney’s physicality and mobility should prove a real handful for Peterborough’s opponents in 2017-18 and, in Steve Evans, he has a manager able to coax the most from his talent. It should not be forgotten that a number of strikers, including Britt Assombalonga, Jack Marriott and Toney’s former teammate Dwight Gayle have earned mega-money moves after thriving at Peterborough. Don’t be surprised if Toney does the same.
