Everton centre-back Matthew Pennington looks set to take a step down to the Championship by moving on loan to Ipswich Town, according to Football Insider.

The reputable football news website reports that the 23-year-old has agreed the terms of a loan switch that would allow him to depart Goodison Park for the season.

The 6”1 [Transfermarkt] enforcer spent the 2017/2018 campaign on loan at Leeds United, making 24 appearances for the club in total.

Championship rivals Wigan Athletic, Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers have all eyed the services of Pennington, but Ipswich now looks to be the most likely destination for a player down the bottom of the pecking order at Everton.

Good move for Everton?

Yes, this is a good move for the Toffees. He does not really feature in Marco Silva’s plans this season, and moving away will allow him to get the regular game time that he needs.

When he gets regular playing time under his belt, Silva may consider him for the first team upon his return if he impresses enough.

Everton have recruited well this summer, so a move for Pennington will benefit both parties.

Likely to happen?

Yes, especially as Everton are happy to let him go in order to let him get as much first team experience under his belt as he can.

Pennington will undoubtedly want the move to happen now he is down the pecking order at Everton, otherwise he will face a long period of time on the bench until January at least.

According to the report, he had agreed terms with the Championship side, so a switch to Ipswich could happen imminently.
