Everton are facing heartache in their last-gasp bid to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sports correspondent and Toffees expert Alan Myers was quoted as saying on the broadcaster’s live transfer blog (Thursday, 4.38pm) that Gomes has undergone a medical with the club but the deal is looking increasingly unlikely.

Everton have been working on signing Gomes on loan as well as permanent deals for his Barcelona teammate Yerry Mina and free agent Bernard, who is a Brazil international.

“Bernard, who we have seen in the building, is very, very close to being done,” Myers told Sky Sports News. “It also seems Everton have won the race for Man Utd target Yerry Mina. We believe Everton have gone out to Barcelona to do the medical, while we also believe Barca midfielderAndre Gomes has had a medical. But whether that one goes through is a little less likely…”

OPINION

Of all the players Everton fans wanted their club to sign on deadline day, Bernard and Mina would have been the two they wanted the most. The Brazilian will provide goals and assists from out wide, while Mina is the commanding centre-back have been crying out for, and who manager Marco Silva has made it clear he desperately wants. Gomes would have been seen by Silva, and the club’s supporters, as a bonus capture. The midfielder has slipped down the pecking order at Barcelona after struggling to make an impression since his £30million transfer two years ago from Valencia. His class and potential as a central midfielder make him a potentially exciting acquisition, and a season-long loan that has been mooted would have been the perfect opportunity to see how he could adapt to English football. It will be a disappointment if the deal collapses in the final minutea, but not a monumental blow.
