Rangers attacker Josh Windass is set to complete a last-minute move to English Championship side Wigan Athletic after a reported transfer battle with Ipswich Town, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster claim on their official Twitter account that the Latics are expecting to seal a deal for the Gers mainstay, as well as a move for Sheffield United’s Lee Evans, having reportedly made a bid to hijack Ipswich’s attempts to sign Windass.

With the English transfer window shutting at 5pm on Thursday (August 9), the north west England side have left it until the last minute to complete the move, with Windass having been an ever-present for the Gers this season, appearing in all five of their matches across all competitions.

Opinion

Windass was never a bad performer for the Light Blues but Steven Gerrard might be feeling he was not able to give the attacker the sort of game time he would have been hoping for. A move to the Championship should suit him well and he may well go on to make a name for himself south of the border. The Gers will be hoping that his exit does not leave them embarrassed in a couple of years, for at 24-years-old, he could still become a potent threat in attack. However, with the vast amount of new arrivals at Ibrox this summer, if first team action is what he wants, then leaving the club is in his best interests. While English clubs might be fighting it out on deadline day, Gerrard has until the end of August to spend his money and so Windass’ exit could well fund some more captures before the summer comes to an end and the season gets into full swing.
