Leeds United and West Brom are among a number of clubs ready for a last-ditch scrap to sign Wigan star Nick Powell before deadline day on Friday, according to TeamTalk.

The news outlet claims that Aston Villa, Derby, Middlesbrough, Stoke and Celtic are also interested in signing Powell, who has been in the form of his career with Wigan and has scored three goals and supplied four assists in five league games this season.

It is understood that the Latics would take £5million for the in-demand 24-year-old, who is now set for a move to another Championship club on a loan deal with the view to it being made permanent in the future.

Good move for Leeds?

Powell has been in stunning form at Wigan.

The former Manchester United midfielder helped the Latics to promotion from League One last season by scoring 15 goals and supplying eight assists in 45 appearances across all competitions, and he has clearly continued that impressive form in the Championship.

For £5million, Leeds cannot really go wrong but with how well Marcelo Bielsa’s midfielder is playing at the minute, the Argentine would be better off investing in his defence instead.

Likely to happen?

A lot of clubs are interested in Powell – and that is no shock at all.

He arrived at Man United from Crewe in 2012 with huge potential, and he is finally showing that he has what it takes at Wigan.

Someone will probably sign him but due to Leeds’ midfield already looking as though it could dominate the Championship, they may not want to spend £5million on someone they don’t really need.

Villa have been linked with Powell for some time so they are probably leading the charge.
