Rio Ferdinand has sent Michael Keane his best wishes on Twitter after the Everton defender suffered a serious head injury in his side’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday.

The England international underwent six minutes of treatment on the pitch following a clash of heads with team mate Idrissa Gueye, and was taken to hospital.

Everton later confirmed that the 25-year-old first teamer has suffered a small hairline fracture of the skull, and his former Manchester United colleague Ferdinand has lent his sympathies: “Wishing Michael Keane a speedy recovery from his head injury yesterday,” he said on his personal Twitter account.

“[It’s] been good to see ya enjoying your football again this season! See you back on the pitch for Everton soon.”

OPINION

Everybody in football will be echoing Ferdinand’s sentiments following Keane’s skull fracture. It’s never good to see a player go down injured, and head injuries are the most worrying of all. The timing is a real shame for Keane, who had started the season impressively following an up and down first year at Goodison Park. Ferdinand is right that he was enjoying his football again, as he shone in the Toffees’ first two games of the new campaign. It’s a blow to Everton, too, who have looked bright under new manager Marco Silva so far this term. This will be a real thorn in the former Watford boss’s side, as it could see the introductions of new recruits Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma into the first team picture sooner than planned. Ferdinand, and everyone involved in football, will be hoping that Keane isn’t out for too long and that he makes a full recovery.
