Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Jamie Murphy is set for a scan within the coming days after an injury he picked up in Rangers’ 3-1 win at Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Murphy, 28, was stretchered off in the second-half after breaking down on the plastic pitch at Rugby Park, leading to fresh inquiries about whether the synthetic surface has any place in Scottish football.

When asked about the attacker’s injury, Gerrard confirmed that it is still too soon to know the severity of it as it appears as though they were waiting for swelling to reduce before he undergoes a scan.

“Yes (it is too early to know about Murphy’s injury). I think the plan will be to let the injury to settle down for a couple of days and then go in and scan it when we can get a clear picture,” said Gerrard, as shown on Rangers’ official Twitter account ahead of the Europa League clash with Ufa on Thursday night.

OPINION

Hopefully Murphy’s injury is not as bad as it looked because he went down in a lot of pain at Rugby Park on Sunday. He is going to miss the clash with Ufa on Thursday night, and that is certainly a blow for the Light Blues, who need all of their best players fit and raring to go in order to qualify for the Europa League group stages. Murphy has played a key role in these qualifiers so far. He has scored once and supplied two assists in his five European matches, but Gerrard will now have to change his plans and rely on someone else to provide the goods against the Russians. Ryan Kent and Daniel Candeias are more than likely going to be the two wide men that Gerrard relies on at Ibrox this week, but away from them pair, he has little other options to play out on the wing. If Murphy’s injury is serious, then at least the transfer window is open for him to look for a quick temporary replacement.
