Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer wants to throw a lifeline to unwanted Leeds flop Eunan O’Kane, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

He’s not the only one though, as the report claims a “number of managers” are interested in the 28-year-old midfielder.

O’Kane was told he would not be part of new manager Marcelo Bielsa’s plans this season and has been training away from the senior team.

Bowyer, the former Leeds player, wants O’Kane and the club will also try and offload Caleb Ekuban before the EFL deadline on Thursday.

If that doesn’t happen Leeds can push them out on loan up until the later window of August 31.

O’Kane, a current Ireland international, signed a new contract with Leeds less than 12 months ago.

Good move for Leeds?

O’Kane was one of the biggest flops last season and he wasn’t going to be a part of the Leeds side this season. The sooner he leaves the better and League 1 Charlton could be the perfect destination for him. Whatever his shortcomings at Leeds, he’d be a solid player in League 1 and it would leave Bielsa to focus on last-minute incomings. Ideally Leeds will get rid of him on a permanent deal – they have two days left to do that unless O’Kane moves overseas.

Likely to happen?

There seems to be the desire on both sides so it could all come down to whether O’Kane wants to drop down a division. That might depend on personal terms and what other offers come in for O’Kane. The report says that Bowyer is just one of a number of interested managers, but time is ticking on a permanent deal. O’Kane won’t want to sit on the sidelines until January so will have to accept that a deal is in his best interests.
