A section of England fans took to Twitter to slam Dele Alli for his performance in England’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia on Wednesday night.
The Tottenham attacking midfielder played the full 120 minutes of the clash but made little impact as Gareth Southgate’s side lost 2-1 in heartbreaking circumstances in Moscow.
England’s only goal was scored by Kieran Trippier from a superb free-kick but his Spurs teammate bore the brunt of heavy criticism from supporters after the match.
This Is Futbol has rounded up some of the best tweets:
Best players Stones (despite late error) & Trippier. New contract for Southgate, but someone tell me what Dele Alli does please? #ENG

Sterling, Dele Allí, Lingard, Rashford…huge disappointment and they were the ones called to push the team forward. Their value has dropped at least 50% in the actual market #ENG #WorldCup

How does Stirling get continually slated yet Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Jesse Lingard & Marcus Rashford get a free pass though? #Eng #ThreeLions

To be honest #eng should of played that chicken they train with in midfield would of done a better job than what Dele and Henderson did tonight. #WorldCup #ENGCRO

Just watched the match. Dele Alli was anonymous. That MF trio does not function. Loftus-Cheek and Wilshere were option. Set price wonders and poor opposition masked a poor #Eng set up tbh

Looked really leggy from 65 minutes, Kane not in the game and Dele even worse. But I thought we’d struggle to get out of the group, and Pickford, Maguire and Trippier have been outstanding. Looking forward to the new season and seeing this group progress. #ENG #ENGCRO @England

Dele Alli, despite the goal v Sweden, should have been the one to drop out. Has looked half-fit all tournament. #ENG #WorldCup

#ENG fans should look back & think what Dele Alli & Lingard did in this #WorldCup an absolute nonsense .. even young had the batter tournament

Dele and Lingard were the weak links all tournament. Should have taken Wilshere and Milner. #WorldCup #Eng

How poor were England ???????? absolutely shocking. ‘Big’ players not turning up on the big occasion, Dele Ali not turning up all tournament and Harry Kane going hiding in the semi-final! #ENG #WorldCup

COMMENTARY:
Most of England’s players exceeded or at least matched expectations during what has been a thrilling passage to the last four. The likes of Trippier, Harry Maguire, Jordan Pickford and John Stones have had the month of their lives, while Harry Kane has confirmed what everyone knew, that he is an outstanding centre-forward and a true global star. Alli also came into the tournament with a big reputation but, in truth, has been a let-down. He has looked sluggish all tournament, with his combination and touch play well below par and, like Jesse Lingard, he looked second rate compared to Croatia’s midfield master Luka Modric. Alli’s criticism from England fans on Twitter is justified, however much Spurs supporters might not like guns being turned on their man.
