Tottenham have made an approach to sign Stuttgart right-back Benjamin Pavard, according to TEAMtalk.

The football site claim the Londoners have registered their interest in the France World Cup winner, 22, as they look to secure a replacement for exit-bound Toby Alderweireld.

TEAMtalk report Spurs boss Pochettino has been blown away by the performances of Pavard and is convinced he has the traits that make him a “perfect like-for-like” successor to Alderweireld.

Good move for Tottenham?

Yes. Pavard would be the perfect versatile defender signing Spurs will definitely need to make should Alderweireld end his three-year spell this summer. The Frenchman has showed at the World Cup he is a stellar talent with a string of superb performances in the best defence in the competition. But Pavard is far more than just a competitor for Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier on the right side of defence. For Stuttgart, he played at centre-back last season and was so reliable and consistent he was only four players to feature in every second of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season. There will be intense competition for Pavard’s signature, but he would be a brilliant replacement for Alderweireld.

Likely to happen?

Stuttgart’s public stance is they don’t want or need to sell Pavard this summer. He has a £30.9million release clause in his contract, but that does not kick in until next year, and 2018 bidders must pay top dollar. Spurs would be considered if Europe’s elite – Bayern Munich have been touted for a swoop – enter the frame.
